YOUNG ENGINEER
AWARD.

This award recognises early-career engineers who’ve already made significant accomplishments and show promise for future leadership in the profession. It highlights the importance of nurturing talent and celebrates those making a mark early in their careers. 

Entrants should demonstrate: 

  • excellence in engineering projects or initiatives 

  • evidence of leadership potential and ability to influence positive change 

  • commitment to continuing professional development and lifelong learning 

  • strong communication skills and ability to articulate complex ideas 

  • involvement in professional organisations or community outreach 

  • vision for the future of engineering and the entrant’s role in shaping it. 

Eligibility

  • Entries are open to New Zealand citizens and permanent residents. 

  • The entrant must be a tertiary-qualified engineer aged 35 or younger on 1 November 2024. 

  • The entrant can’t have received the award previously from Engineering New Zealand or IPENZ.

  • Finalists must be available in April/May 2025 for an online interview with the judging panel. 

  • The entrant doesn't have to be an Engineering New Zealand member. 

Judging criteria 

  • Career achievements (30%): Notable accomplishments and contributions to significant initiatives 

  • Leadership potential (25%): Demonstrated ability to influence and guide others 

  • Professional development (20%): Commitment to ongoing learning and career growth 

  • Communication skills (15%): Ability to articulate ideas clearly and persuasively 

  • Vision and impact (10%): Understanding of engineering's role in society and potential for future contributions
